TCF - Test de connaissance du français

The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) is a standardized French language proficiency test developed by the CIEP, a public partner of the French Ministry of Education. The test is validated by a scientific committee composed of the best French and European specialists. The test ranks candidates in one of six levels on a scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Language) and ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe).

For more information about the TCF please consult the CIEP website.

There are four versions of the TCF offered at the University of Ottawa, each for a different purpose.

The TCF tout public is for people who would like to know their level of French proficiency for personal, professional or educational purposes. The TCF Compulsory Test is a multiple-choice test that measures reading comprehension, listening comprehension, and command of language structures (grammar). The TCF tout public also includes optional tests for written and spoken expression.

Please note:
You must take the TCF tout public if you want to register at a French university for the “deuxième cycle” (second stage of an undergraduate course) or for the “troisième cycle” (graduate school course), Sciences Po, a “Grande école” or a business school.

You must take the TCF-DAP If you would like to submit a “preliminary admission application” to a French university (Dossier blanc, vert ou jaune de demande d’admission préalable) for the “premier cycle” OR for a school of architecture in France and you do not have the DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française).
